This category presents Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs), critical safety equipment in laboratories handling biological materials, including cell cultures and microorganisms. Their purpose is to provide effective triple protection: protecting the user from exposure to hazardous aerosols, protecting the sample or process from external contamination, and protecting the environment from the release of biological contaminants.
A biological safety cabinet, particularly the most common Class II type, operates using a sophisticated airflow system and high-efficiency HEPA (or ULPA) filters. Inward airflow (Inflow) from the room into the cabinet opening creates an air barrier that prevents aerosols from escaping and protects the user. Simultaneously, HEPA-filtered vertical laminar airflow (Downflow) bathes the work area from top to bottom, preventing cross-contamination and protecting the sample from external contamination.
Air from the work zone is drawn through grilles at the front and rear of the work surface, passes through another HEPA filter, and part of it is recirculated as Downflow, while the remainder is exhausted (Exhaust), usually after passing through another HEPA filter. The main differences between Class II subtypes (such as Type A2, Type B2, Type C1) relate to the ratio of recirculated to exhausted air and how (or if) the exhaust is connected to the building’s ventilation system. Choosing the correct Type depends on the biological risk level and the potential use of small quantities of volatile chemicals.
BSCs are essential for a wide variety of laboratory applications:
Labotal is proud to represent the American company Labconco in Israel, one of the world’s leading and longest-established manufacturers of biological safety cabinets and quality laboratory equipment. Labconco cabinets, like the innovative Purifier Logic+® and Axiom® series, excel with advanced airflow control technologies (such as the MyLogic™ OS system), ergonomic design for maximum working comfort, high reliability, and energy savings. The cabinets meet the most stringent international standards, including NSF/ANSI 49 and EN 12469.
We offer a wide range of models from Labconco, including the popular Type A2 suitable for most biological applications, the Type B2 designed for total exhaust and also suitable for work with small amounts of toxic volatile chemicals, and the innovative Type C1 offering maximum flexibility, allowing safe work in recirculating mode or connected to external ventilation as needed. Dedicated models like the Purifier Cell Logic+® are specially adapted with unique features for sensitive cell culture work. Choosing Labconco through Labotal guarantees you not only excellent equipment but also professional consultation for selecting the appropriate model, professional installation, certification (validation) services, and routine maintenance by qualified and experienced technicians.
