Room HPV Decontamination

Existing Methods of Bio-Decontamination

There is a wide range of methods and materials for decontaminating equipment and spaces in the pharmaceutics, food and health fields. The purpose of the decontamination procedure is decreasing the biological load to the minimum without endangering the user, damaging the facility or leaving residues on the equipment and room surfaces. The common methods today are mainly the use of chemicals, radiation and heat. The common feature for these methods is the potential to hurt the user and damage equipment as a consequence of hazardous exposure. Residues from the decontamination process are hazardous as well, because they may penetrate the production line and from there the product and the final user, or just expose the workers in the decontaminated area to dengerous, maybe cancerous, materials.

Hidrogen Peroxide Vapour (HPV) decontamination, on the other hand, enables a 6-log biological load decrease (i.e. only one of every million organisms survives) safelt, without leaving residues or damaging equimpent and surfaces.

Why HPV Decontamination?

Unlike formaldehyde which is banned for use in many countries, HPV is not toxic, breaks down to water and oxigen upon contact with biological matter, and thus is environment-friendly. In the end of the process, there is no need to neutralize or wipe off residues. Upon contact with the biological matter, free radicals are released, damaging the contaminant's structure and thus effecting a wide range of biological contaminants. HPV is not a gas and cannot move and spread easily beyond the decontaminated area. This fact enable a safe operation, both for the operator and the surroundings. A room can be decontaminated without shutting down adjacent rooms. The decontamination process takes place in room temperature. The equipment in the room will be kept inside, in operation, and will be decontaminated as well.

How Does It Work?

Bioquell's HPV Generator uses hidrogen peroxide in a 30-35% concentration and vapourizes it to the decontaminated spcae. The HPV concentration in the space rises up to the dew point - the point in which the relative humidity is 100%. At this point a micro-condensation accures on the space's surfaces. This condensation assures a homogenious spread of hidrogen peroxide on the surfaces and a 6-log biological load decrease. During the whole operation, a probe monitors the humidity and HPV concentration, and verifies reaching the dew-point and not beyond. After reaching the dew point and a short wait to assure an effective decontamination, the air from the space is circulated through a carbon filter inside the generator. the hidrogen peroxide vapours are evacuated and separated into water and oxigen. Upon reaching a consentration below 1 PPM the procedure is ended. The validation is made by placing bio-indicators (Standard 6-Log Geobacillus Stearothermophilus) in the space before-hand, and their growth afterwards. Dead bio-indicators mean a successful procedure.
